| KNEE PAIN SYMPTOMS CAUSED BY KNEE STRAIN AND PULLED KNEE MUSCLES AND LIGAMENTS. |
| Most
people have experienced knee pain sometime in their life. The causes of
knee pain are numerous; some are self-inflicted due to a lifetime of
bad habits. Other knee pain causes include accidents, ligament strains,
and sports injuries. Although the causes may be different, most often
they share the same symptoms. Knee pain may be the result of an injury, such as a ruptured ligament or torn cartilage. Or, certain medical conditions, including arthritis, gout and infection, may be at the root of your knee pain. The symptoms for knee pain are: Persistent aching or stiffness anywhere along the sides of your knee or under the knee cap; Sharp, localized pain under the knee cap, left side or right side -- especially after lifting heavy objects or engaging in other strenuous activity; Some common causes of knee pain and injuries include: A blow to the knee, either from contact during sports, a fall or a car accident. Repeated stress or overuse, which may occur from playing sports or if your work or hobby require doing the same activity over and over again. Sudden turning, pivoting, stopping, cutting from side to side, which happens frequently during certain sports. Awkward landings from a fall or from jumping during sports, such as basketball Rapidly growing bones, which are especially prone to injury during sports Degeneration from aging or knee arthritis Knee supports or knee braces can help alleviate knee pain. Wearing a knee brace assists in supporting the knee in lateral movement. The most common knee injuries other than sudden, acute knee injuries are injuries caused by overuse or overload. Knee supports, knee braces and neoprene knee supports, in conjunction with proper knee alignment assists significantly in lowering stress to your knee, therefore reducing the chance of a knee injury and knee pain. Even the mere use of a knee strap can a have significant effect on keeping the knee aligned and assisting in learning proper positioning and alignment. Knee strain is also related to pulled knee muscles: Simple strains are the most common cause of knee pain, especially behind the knee cap. Muscle strain is often caused by overuse of a muscle or overloading a muscle. When a muscle is stressed beyond its limits, injury occurs. Strains usually occur without wearing a knee brace or knee support and not having a proper knee alignment. The knee muscles are therefore overstretched or torn due to being overloaded. Poor lifting techniques as well as lifting objects that are too heavy can overload the knee and can cause a strained knee leading to knee pain. Using a hinged knee brace or a knee strap while lifting objects significantly assists keeping proper knee alignment, proper alignment distributes the weight lifted properly therefore reducing the chance of knee injury. Weak muscles are more easily overloaded and injured than strong muscles, but any muscle can be overloaded. Knee Muscle Strain may be caused by overuse: Knee pain often occurs when a muscle contraction is held too long especially when the knee is not in proper alignment. When one position is held too long, the knee muscles get fatigued and strained, causing severe knee pain. During sports, knee braces should be used. Take care when putting the hinged knee brace on to make sure that the hinges are where the knee bends. Straps, tapes or hook-and-loop tapes should be fastened around your leg. You should check the placement of the knee brace during activities to make sure that it hasn't moved. To work well, a knee brace or knee support should be worn during all activities that put you at risk of injury to your knee. Don't forget to warm up properly before beginning any athletic activity. Doing too many repetitive movements can also cause muscle strain from overuse. Increasing knee exercises too quickly can also cause knee pain due to overuse injuries. The use of a knee brace and or a knee support can prevent low knee pain by forcing the knee to stay in proper alignment. Since using knee braces and neoprene knee supports lowers complaints of knee pain among workers many companies have ergonomic awareness programs to help prevent the rate of knee pain and injury. Knee arthritis: Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis that affects the knee. This type of knee arthritis occurs when the cartilage in the joint gradually wears away, and often affects middle-age and older people. Osteoarthritis may be caused by excess stress on the joint such as repeated injury or being overweight. Rheumatoid arthritis can also affect the knees by causing the joint to become inflamed and by destroying the knee cartilage. Rheumatoid arthritis often affects persons at an earlier age than osteoarthritis. What are knee braces? Knee braces are supports that you wear for a painful or injured knee or to prevent the onset of knee pain. Some people use them to prevent knee pain during sports. Braces are made from combinations of metal, foam, plastic, elastic material and straps. They come in many sizes, colors and designs. Elastic or Neoprene Supportive Knee Braces These knee braces are readily available. Some people find they feel better with added elastic support around the knee to prevent knee pain. They are relatively inexpensive and safe to try. These types of knee braces are usually worn by people who feel the need for added knee support during sports or daily activities. Exercise helps prevent and relieve acute knee pain. Exercise is vital to maintain strength and flexibility of muscles supporting the knee, which reduces the stress on the knee joint, including those suffering from knee arthritis and knee pain caused by sudden injury: As a general rule, people who are active and well-conditioned are much less likely to suffer from knee pain due to muscle strain, as regular exercise stretches the muscles so they are less likely to strain, tear or spasm. Doing knee exercises to strengthen and stretch the muscles that support the knee are vital for knee pain and injury prevention. Proper footwear and use of a knee support or a neoprene knee support is also important, especially if walking or running on hard surfaces. Keep your weight under control. Reducing one's weight reduces stress upon the knee, thereby decreasing the chance for knee pain. A complete exercise program for the knee should consist of a combination of : Stretching Strengthening In summary, knee braces and knee supports are used in the treatment of knee pain patients, to prevent the onset of knee pain (primary prevention) or to prevent recurrences of a knee pain episode (secondary prevention) by assisting in learning proper knee alignment and positioning. Having a good exercise program can greatly reduce the chance of knee injury. |
